How the night time pictures are created

The VM95 software that controls the camera takes multiple exposures when the ambient light is low, and "adds" these exposures together to create a final picture. The C4000-Z camera that we use can take a picture with a maximum exposure time of 16 seconds. The software will take up to 16 total pictures, each at 16 seconds, for a total exposure time of about 4 minutes and 15 seconds. It takes about 30 seconds to process each picture, that's why there are gaps in the plane and star trails on some of the archived pictures.

At night, the camera sometimes has a difficult time focusing correctly, mainly because it can't "see" when the focus is set. That's why the lightning pictures are out of focus. Hopefully, we'll get a nicely focused picture of lightning in the future.
